American rapper Nelly has responded to critics who attacked him for agreeing to perform at the Liberty Inaugural Ball, one of the events celebrating Donald Trump’s second-term inauguration as President of the United States.

Speaking in an interview with Willie D Live, Nelly clarified that his decision to perform was not political but rather a matter of respect for the occasion.

“This is not a campaign. I’m doing this out of respect, not for money. I respect the office of the presidency, regardless of who is in power,” Nelly explained.

The rapper likened his role to the patriotic duty of U.S. military personnel, who serve under any president without bias. He emphasized that honoring the outcome of an election is a key aspect of respecting the democratic process.

In addition to Nelly, the legendary group Village People will also perform at the event. In a statement posted on their official Facebook page, the group expressed that their music is meant to promote unity, not political agendas.

However, reactions to their involvement have been mixed. While some see it as an act of inclusivity, others perceive it as an endorsement of Trump’s politics.
