Tanzanian Bongo Flava star Marioo has dropped a brand new track titled “Alhamdulillah,” and it’s already generating buzz. This latest release takes a more introspective turn, with Marioo reflecting on his past struggles and expressing gratitude for his current success.
“Alhamdulillah,” meaning “praise be to God” in Arabic, is a powerful expression of thankfulness. In this song, Marioo recounts his humble beginnings and the challenges he faced growing up. He paints a vivid picture of his past, where even basic necessities were scarce:
Nilipotoka ukimwaga mboga wanamwaga ugali wanatoboa na sufuria Nilikotoka pilau na soda mkila mjue ni siku ya sikuku
These lyrics translate to “Where I come from, if you spill vegetables, they spill the ugali and pierce the pot. Where I come from, if you eat pilau and soda, know it’s a special occasion.” This paints a stark picture of the poverty he experienced.
Marioo also touches on his mother’s sacrifices as a single parent who struggled to provide for him:
Mama single mother shule sijasoma, ila mtaa ulinifunza kupambana, niko mi na mother
This translates to “My mother was a single mother, I didn’t go to school, but the streets taught me to fight, it’s just me and my mother.”
Despite the hardships, Marioo never gave up. He persevered, and now, he’s enjoying the fruits of his labor. The chorus is a powerful declaration of gratitude:
Alhamdulillah atukufuru Mungu, Sasa ivyi tukonazo, chapat na marage ndio imeleta doo Boda boda dalala imeleta doooohh
This translates to “Praise be to God, we don’t deny God. Now with what we have, chapati and beans have brought the good life. Boda boda hustling has brought the good life.”
“Alhamdulillah” is a testament to Marioo’s resilience and an inspiring reminder that with hard work and determination, anyone can overcome adversity. It’s a song that will resonate with listeners from all walks of life, especially those who have faced their own struggles.
