The National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) has officially announced the release of the 2024 Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) results today. According to NECTA, 80.87% of the students who sat for the PSLE this year successfully passed, marking a significant milestone in primary education achievements across the country.
The PSLE is a critical examination in Tanzania, determining students’ progression from primary to secondary school. This year’s pass rate highlights the dedication of both educators and students, as well as the support from parents and communities in nurturing academic success.

Overview of Star Codes Used by NECTA
When NECTA publishes examination results, it uses specific “Star Codes” to clarify certain situations in which results may be delayed, suspended, or impacted by other factors. These codes help provide transparency for students, parents, and educators when interpreting results, especially in cases where scores are withheld, nullified, or otherwise incomplete. Below is a description of each Star Code and what it signifies:
- S – Results Suspended: This code indicates that a candidate’s results are temporarily on hold pending clarification of anomalies such as issues in entry details or potential involvement in examination irregularities. In some cases, it also applies to schools or centers that did not meet NECTA’s registration requirements, such as having fewer than the minimum required 35 candidates.
- E – Results Withheld: This code shows that NECTA is withholding results until the candidate provides proof of having paid the necessary examination fees.
- I – Incomplete Results: This code has two versions. When “I” applies to all subjects, it indicates that the student has missing Continuous Assessment (CA) scores across all subjects. In cases where CA scores are missing for only one or more subjects, but not all, an “I” is also used to highlight these incomplete scores.
- W – Results Withheld/Nullified: This code denotes that the candidate’s results have been withheld or canceled due to confirmed instances of dishonesty or irregularities before, during, or after the exam.
- T – Transferred Results: NECTA transfers specific subject results to the prior year if a candidate was unable to complete their exam due to illness, thus preserving their scores where possible.
- ABS – Absent: The code “ABS” indicates that a candidate missed taking the examination altogether.
- FLD – Failed: The “FLD” code is used for candidates who did not meet the minimum requirements to pass the examination.
- X – Absent for Specific Subject(s): This code highlights that a candidate did not appear for the examination in specific registered subjects.
Celebrating Success and Preparing for the Future
As students, parents, and educators receive and review the 2024 PSLE results, the impressive 80.87% pass rate provides optimism for the future of Tanzanian education. NECTA’s transparent use of Star Codes ensures that the examination process remains fair and accountable.
